Jardani Ducuara
This coffee comes from nano lot #0100 from Jardani Ducuara’s farm La Reforma, a member of the small Coagrivida cooperative in the town of Planadas, Tolima.
The delicious flavours in this coffee are the result of careful husbandry and unbeatable terroir.
At 2,050 metres above sea level in the small rural neighbourhood of Vista Hermosa, Jardani harvested this 100% Caturra lot in October last year, fermenting it for approximately 24 hours before slowly drying it on raised beds for a further 20 days.
This is a nanolot of coffee: only 72kg of this coffee was harvested this year, so this is the only chance to try this coffee this year (drink up!).
Almost all our Brew Crew coffees are similar to the concept of single-estate wines: they’re usually beans from a single farmer’s crop. Microlots are smaller still: usually the harvest of a single area of the farm or a particular varietal that the farmer knows is particularly delicious.
Nanolots are even smaller: it’s the smallest amount of coffee that can be sold with full traceability back the farm. Small lots of lower quality are typically mixed at the wetmill to produce a blend.
Due to recent civil unrest in the environs of Planadas, we have not been able to personally visit Jardani's farm. That said, our export partners visited Planadas early last year in order to begin working with Coagrivida; one harvest and a fly crop later, we are happy to enjoy a fruitful relationship that has resulted in coffees such as Jardani Ducuara's.
Planadas is the southernmost municipality of Tolima. It sits in the eastern slopes of Colombia's central cordillera, above the Magdalena River Valley, and boasts average temperatures of 20º celsius. Much of the coffee farming in this region takes place in partial shade, provided by güamo (ice cream bean trees), nogal cafetero (Spanish Elms) and cacao.
Not far from El Cañón de Las Hermosas, the FARC's famed stronghold, Planadas has unfortunately often founds itself caught in the middle of Colombia's long civil war.

Caturra is a natural mutation of Bourbon that was originally discovered in Brazil in 1937, considered to be the first naturally occurring mutation ever discovered.
Colombia is one of the largest coffee producers in the world and benefits greatly from having one of the most unique and complex set of micro-climates of all coffee producing nations.
The word ‘Tolima’ comes from the local indigenous language and means a “river of snow or cloud”.
Machines are used to remove the flesh from the coffee cherry before being fermented in water, washed again, and finally sun dried. This process tends to result in more distinct, cleaner flavours.
